When did you first discover FiveFingers?
I discovered FiveFingers in my high school library during lunch in a TIME magazine’s 100 Best Inventions of 2007. I really liked the idea of a shoe that felt close to being barefoot and I was fascinated by the neon blue sole!
Favorite pair and why:
My new favorite is the V-Alpha! I feel that Vibram has made the most improvements on the FiveFinger brand with this model as well as innovation in sole technology with the thin but versatile all-rubber MegaGrip sole. Its simple, yet extremely functional for multiple situations. They are now my favorite shoes to play drums in! Honorable Mentions: the Komodo Sport & the Classic!
What’s your passion:
Oooh, that’s difficult. The easy answer is musicianship! My music career was born out of a hobby that unintentionally led to professional career. I play live as a drummer, but I also play Guitar, Mandolin, Piano and Sing proficiently! I’m currently learning the ways of music production. I have a passion for philosophy, networking, philanthropy, songwriting, bouldering, etc. It may be clichéd, but I believe my passion is life and life is an adventure full of possibility and endless knowledge!
How have FiveFingers changed your life (if they have!):
I believe FiveFingers have helped me blossom as an individual. Y’know, on top of improving posture and calf muscles, etc., I feel like wearing these shoes helps me express my unique self. FiveFingers has helped me to relearn how to have proper form in my stride after a lifetime of toe box indoctrination. Besides, I'm from Tennessee and we don't really wear shoes down here anyway… ;)
What's the most popular question you get about FiveFingers?
“Do those feel good?” “Are they comfortable?” “Doesn't it feel weird to have something between your toes like that?!” My answers are simple: “Yes.” “It’s like being barefoot except with slightly more protection.” “Do you wear gloves? Its kinda like that. You forget they’re on after awhile. It’s like they become a second skin!”
What would you like to see in FiveFingers' designs in the future?
More color options on V-Alpha, I’d like to see the velcro strap return on more models, & maybe some eco-friendly Leather/Leatherette/Suede uppers.
Name 3 people you most admire:
In no specific order:
Christian von Koenigsegg - This fascinating Swedish man was inspired to build cars and pursue engineering by a film he saw as a child to innovate automotive engineering as we know it! He uses that knowledge, passion, & curiosity to build stunning vehicles! The Koenigsegg One:1 holds the record for fastest 0-200 km/h at 6.6 sec., they invented the first hollow carbon fibre wheel, & Christian is developing a camless piston engine! These breakthroughs will undoubtedly trickle down & influence technology and human progress moving forward.
Fred “Mr. Rogers” Rogers - What a wonderful heart that man had! Such a caring, kind, curious, ambitious, philanthropical person. He left a legacy of teaching everyone to be a pleasant, respectful, and neighborly person to whomever may cross your path! Won’t you be my neighbor?
My father - This guy is too smart for his own good, and his vast catalogue of knowledge comes from a place of real curiosity. I think that’s where I get it! He genuinely just wants to know how things work whether it’s mechanical, historical, grammatical, you name it: he knows something about it or he will within a day of you asking him. He’s got a level head and he can be stubborn, but fair. Don’t tell him I said that..
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Honestly, I’m super proud that I have been blessed with the opportunity to be a face of this wonderful company and product! My affinity for VFF bled into my music career in a fortunately harmonious way. Even then, it was merely a pipe-dream that I’d ever be officially representing Vibram, a global footwear company, for playing music and having fun. Fun fact, years ago I used to hashtag Instagram posts on my band’s account with FiveFingers in them “#EndorseMePlease” as a joke for kicks and giggles! That being said, I’m also immensely proud that I’ve been able to make a career out of a hobby and that it’s led me to this surreal stage in my life!
What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?
I’m really enamored with the Caribbean, and Montana has some incredibly breathtaking vistas; but I think the 11,000 ft Hidden Peak during powder season at Snowbird Ski resort in Salt Lake City, Utah takes the cake! It’s probably because that place really means something to me and holds all the nostalgia of learning to Ski/Snowboard on that mountain. Also, the views present a bird’s eye view of many lines and routes on which to traverse down the mountain and that really gets the adrenaline pumping!
If you could eat only 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Another tough one. I love exploring with my palate! The essentials that come to mind would be Caprese Salad (w/ Lavender balsamic, Olive oil, and Truffle salt), Belgian Milk Chocolate and last, but not least, TN Tonkotsu from Otaku Ramen in Nashville, TN!
What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?
The most courageous thing I’ve ever done was put myself between a belligerent peer of mine & a group of women he was harassing at a holiday party. He was bigger than me and as out of control as a runaway train, but I couldn't allow myself to stand there and act like nothing was happening. I was almost certain I was going to take a beating, but fortunately another gentleman stepped in to help quell the situation. I’m proud of myself for having the confidence to stand up for what was right!
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Fail. Learn to fail. Failure is the key to success. Without failure, one cannot know how to truly value what it means to succeed. Do not fear failure. Learn to embrace it, and use the knowledge and strength you gain to excel in your future endeavors.
