When did you first discover FiveFingers?

In 2011, I was looking for a shoe for a 10-day spiritual retreat in Costa Rica. On this trip, I would be practicing yoga, hiking, trekking, rafting and other water sports. I suffered from a degenerative spine condition that caused chronic pain. I wanted to get the most of out this experience without packing 10 different pairs of shoes. I discovered Vibram in my research.

Favorite pair and why:

KSO EVO is my favorite. They encourage good form and are very flexible to unpredictable terrain. They are my go-to shoe for the gym or walks on the beach.

What’s your passion:

I am passionate about helping women rewrite their stories. I was born in the poorest zip code in my city, and today I enjoy experiences that I didn’t know were possible. By sharing my journey, I hope more women are inspired to step beyond their past story to experience the reality of their dreams.

How have FiveFingers changed your life (if they have!):

OMG!! The 2011 spiritual retreat was a huge turning point for me and Vibram helped me take those first steps. Vibram have been a part of every major adventure I have had since; 28 passport stamps, 4 continents,22 countries, 325 cities.

What’s the most popular question you get about FiveFingers?

“How did you become a brand ambassador?” is actually the question I get most these days.

Of course, I became an ambassador after I ran my first 5K benefiting St Jude’s in 2016.  Becoming a Vibram ambassador represented a way for me to make my steps really count towards the cure for childhood cancer.

What would you like to see in FiveFingers' designs in the future?

I would love more casual shoe selections.

Name 3 people you most admire:

It is quite simple for me. I admire the people who taught me what it means to live and love; my parents, my husband and my 2 sons.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Launching Storealities -  a women’s empowerment project that gives voice to the stories of everyday women. My first book releases Spring 2018 and includes my own story along with inspiring journeys of 20+ women across the country. We are also in pre-production for a documentary film.

What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

Bali Indonesia and Machu Picchu are a really close tie.

If you could eat only 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Aguaje (indigenous fruit of Peru)

Satay (popular Balinese dish)

Belize fruit cake

What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?

Supporting my son and Vibram ambassador partner, Jamie in a 1 year language immersion program abroad. He was my only child at the time and I had no idea how a 15 year African American child from Memphis would adapt in France with 9th grade level French. I was keen on the role world education and exposure had in my life. I wanted to offer that to him as early as possible. But it was petrifying.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

“Be kind to dull bulbs. Without them you wouldn’t seem so bright.”

It was my father’s way of telling me not to let my intelligence interfere with humility and compassion for others.
